May 2024 Newsletter Honoring Sacrifice Memorial Day is right around the corner. For many, it marks the beginning of summer. As Americans, however, the day is a time to remember those who paid the ultimate price, fighting to preserve the freedoms we enjoy. Wherever you spend Memorial Day, we invite you to pause and remember those who never returned from the battlefield. As a way to honor and remember the 15,458 Michigan service men and women who lost their lives during WWII, the Memorial will include an imposing 10-feet high and 50-feet black granite Wall of Stars. We are currently raising funds for the Wall as well as the other elements that will complete The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial. We need your help as we work to complete this $2M project honoring Michigan's warfront and home front heroes. Monday, May 27th 2:00-5:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Ceremony Memorial Park, Royal Oak The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial and the Royal Oak Leprechauns are co-hosting a Memorial Day Family Fun Day in Memorial Park. Bring the whole family and celebrate Memorial Day with us. The day will feature games for all ages, food, music by Bobby McManus, and a special Memorial Day ceremony and wreath laying, which will take place at 4:00 p.m. The day will be capped off with the Royal Oak Leprechauns' Opening Day game against the Kenosha Kingfish, beginning at 6:35 p.m. Tickets for the game can be purchased through the Royal Oak Leprechauns' website. Bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets. Parking is available in the 13 Mile and Coolidge lot or in the city lot adjacent to the Memorial site, just south of Village Jeep. Click here for event flier Click here to purchase RO Leprechauns baseball tickets Farmington to Dedicate First Plaque in The Michigan WWII Historic Trail The first plaque in The Michigan WWII Historic Trail will be dedicated on Memorial Day, May 24th, at the conclusion of the Farmington Memorial Day parade. The parade begins at 10:00 a.m., marching west on Grand River from Orchard Lake Road and ending at the city's War Memorial Monument, located in Farmington's Memorial Park, located on Oakland Avenue. The Historic Trail plaque will be unveiled and dedicated as part of the Memorial Day ceremony taking place in the park. All are invited. Click here for more information about becoming a part of the trail Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day Plans are in the works for a special D-Day celebration marking the 80th anniversary of the landing on the beaches in Normandy, which turned the tide of the war in Europe. We will have WWII vehicles at the park from noon until 5:00 p.m. on June 6th, with a short ceremony held at 12:30 p.m. Be sure to watch our Facebook page and website for more details. Members of the Royal Oak Garden Club and Memorial volunteers cleaned out and prepared the Memorial garden box, located at 13 Mile and Woodward Avenue. Over the next few weeks volunteers will be planting a variety of red, white, and blue flowers to beautify the entrance to Memorial Park. We want to give a big shout out to the Garden Club for collecting funds at this year's Royal Oak in Bloom. The money will be used to purchase flowers for the garden. We are also seeking volunteers to help with weeding and maintenance during the growing season. If you can to help, contact us! I want to help! Book of the Month With the 80th anniversary of D-Day coming up, we thought it appropriate to promote a WWII classic for summer reading. The Longest Day is Cornelius Ryan's unsurpassed account of D-Day, a book that endures as a masterpiece of military history. In this compelling tale of courage and heroism, glory and tragedy, Ryan painstakingly recreates the fateful hours that preceded and followed the massive invasion of Normandy to retell the story of an epic battle that would turn the tide against world fascism and free Europe from the grip of Nazi Germany. This book, first published in 1959, is a must for anyone who loves history, as well as for anyone who wants to better understand how free nations prevailed at a time when darkness enshrouded the earth. 1st District Deceased Members Memorial Service

 On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, a memorial was held at Post 32 to honor members of the Post and Auxiliary who had passed away. The 1st District and 1st District Auxiliary leaders were responsible for hosting the memorial. District Commander Karl Burnett and District Auxiliary President Debbie Abraham led the recognition along with The 1st District Chaplain Thomas Catterall and District Auxiliary Chaplain Helen Pardo. Several District Post Commanders attended and participated in the memorial. The Post 32 Honor Guard posted the colors, performed a 21-gun salute, and played taps. A dinner was provided by the Post 32 kitchen staff, which was enjoyed by all.

Detroit VA Offering Tele-Emergency Care

                                                                                                     

Detroit VA Medical Center now offers Tele-Emergency Care services for local enrolled Veterans

 

The Department of Veterans Affairs is pleased to announce the addition of tele-emergency care services for enrolled Veterans in the Metro-Detroit area.  Enrolled Veterans can access this new service by dialing the Detroit VA Medical Center at (313) 576-1000 and pressing "3," effective immediately.  Medical triage staff are available 24/7 and will guide the Veteran to the appropriate level of care, including tele-emergency care. 

Tele-emergency care (tele-EC) offers Veterans many of the same services they can receive in a traditional emergency room, but from the comfort of their own home.  This helps prevent the Veteran from having to drive in, potentially wait for hours in a waiting room, minimizes exposure to illnesses from other patients, etc.  There is also no co-pay for these services.  Further, choosing to utilize the VA for emergency care, whether through the tele-EC or in-person services, ensures a smooth continuity of care as the Veteran's medical providers will already have access to the Veteran's full medical record. 

While Veterans with life-or-limb-threatening injuries or illnesses should go to an in-person emergency room or call 911, tele-EC can serve Veterans with a wide variety of conditions, including:

 

• Cough, cold, flu, and COVID symptoms
• Sore throats
• COPD and asthma flares
• Eye redness and irritation
• Tick and other insect bites
• Skin infections
• Minor allergic reactions
• GI illnesses
• Urinary tract infections
• Gout flares
• Muscle sprains/strains
