We are asking for your assistance in recommending scholarship candidates to the Boys State, Girls State, and the Student Trooper/Youth Cadet Law Enforcement Program. Please pass these summer scholarship opportunities to your staff, counselors, political science, history, government, speech and English teachers or any students/parents that may have candidates to attend. The American Legion Post 303 is looking for qualified juniors to learn about the government in a college setting from June 23rd through the 29th all expenses paid. The Michigan American Legion is providing your students with a scholarship opportunity to attend the premier educational American Legion Boys State, American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, and the Student Trooper/Youth Cadet Law programs. These programs are designed to teach how government works while developing leadership skills and an appreciation of their rights as citizens. Students participate in a non-partisan weeklong program, run for government positions, use public speaking skills, create and enforce laws and actively participate in all phases of creating and running a working government in an exciting and educational summer program. Boys State is held at Grand Valley State University in Allendale and Girls State is held on the Michigan State University Campus in Lansing Michigan. Both will be held during the week of June 23–29, 2024. The Student Trooper/Youth Cadet Law Enforcement Program is held at the Michigan State Police Academy Training site in Lansing Michigan on June 9-14th. Boys State/Girls State:
The Boys State motto is "learn by doing." The educational staff's goal is to facilitate the learning process by giving the citizens of Boys State and Girls State an opportunity to govern themselves and run their own state. Classroom lectures, and hands-on activities promote "learn by doing". You must be in the 11th Grade or equivalent in-home school program or have ½ semester to complete as a senior and a US Citizen.

Samsung Scholarships for Boys State/Girls State Participants:
Participants in either Boys/Girls State programs who are direct descendants of veterans have an opportunity to win a $1000 scholarship at the State level and the top 10 winners in the final round will receive $10,000 each and the runners-up receive $5,000 from Samsung Corporation. Scholarship applicants must complete and send their online application prior to 11:59 (local time) of Day 1 of their respective American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program. All applications must be submitted using the online application system and may not be modified after the due date or given a deadline extension under any circumstance.
The Student Trooper/Youth Cadet Law Enforcement Program:
The American Legion, Department of Michigan in partnership with the Michigan State Police Training Academy in Lansing provides an opportunity for high school students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades to learn about a career in law enforcement. Students spend one week at the Michigan State Police Training site learning many aspects of a law enforcement career. DEADLINE IS MAY 1, 2024.
